Congratulations to those students who received the top rating of “Superior” at Virginia Music Teachers Association (VMTA) Fall Festival, held locally at Cherrydale United Methodist Church on November 11, 2017. All students performed two pieces from memory, one in contemporary (20th century) style, and one in historic style.

Congratulations to Kiernan Bartlett who received the top award of “Honors” at a recital sponsored by Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association on November 13, 2016. She performed the ragtime-fantasy “The Serpent’s Kiss” by the American composer William Bolcom.

Congratulations to Rishi Vanka, who was selected for the top award of “Honors” at the Judged Recital held on April 17, 2016 at the Woman’s Club of Arlington. Rishi performed Invention in F Major by J.S. Bach and Cakewalk by Claude Debussy.

In the Composition Competition sponsored by Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association…
Owen Rollins was selected for Special Recognition and had the opportunity to perform at the Honors Recital for his two compositions: Etude in G (for string ensemble), and Happiness (for piano solo). In addition, Etude in G was selected to be performed by the all-volunteer McLean Symphony at their concert at the Barns of Wolf Trap on April 17.
Tamara Ayers was selected for Special Recognition and had the opportunity to perform at the Honors Recital: On the Way to the Office (piano solo)
James Hughes placed second at the Region level of this all-instrument competition. He previously placed first at the local and district levels. Way to go, James!
On March 11, 2014, James Hughes won first place at the Lion’s Club Solo Competition at the district level. He previously was recognized at the local club level and now moves on to the Regional level. Winners of the Regional-level competition advance to the final level, which is all-state. James performed Beethoven’s Sonata in D Major Op. 28, first movement.
Congratulations to James Hughes, who won first place in the Bailey’s Cross Roads Lions Club solo competition on February 11, 2014. James now has the opportunity to play his piece, the first movement of Beethoven’s “Pastorale” Sonata, Op. 28, at the region-level contest.
