Student Honors: RCM Exams Winter/Spring 2022

Congratulations to our high school senior Owen Rollins for earning Honors with Distinction on his Level 10 RCM Exam in December 2021. The Level 10 exam requires students to present five repertoire pieces in varied styles as well as two etudes and an assortment of foundational practical skills. Students who pass this exam have demonstrated a level of practical knowledge and performance skill similar to a third-year college undergraduate piano major. Owen performed Prelude & Fugue in A-flat Major, WTC 1 (J.S. Bach) ♪ Sonata in F Major Op. 10 No. 2, first and second movements (L. van Beethoven) ♪ Nocturne in b-flat minor, Op. 9 No. 1 (F. Chopin) ♪ Clair de Lune (C. Debussy) ♪ Graceful Ghost Rag (W. Bolcom) ♪ And, etudes by Chopin and Czerny.

The Studio will be OPEN on Friday January 7, however many lessons are being taught remotely. If you are not sure of your status for today (remote vs. in-person) please contact your teacher or Mr. Horowitz before coming to the Studio.

The Studio will be OPEN on our usual schedule on Thursday January 6 with most lessons taking place in-person at the Studio unless you have previously arranged for a remote lesson.

CURRENT OPENINGS As we look ahead to January/February, we expect a tight schedule during "prime" times with additional options in early (3:00 and before) and late (at/near 8:00 PM) slots. We do have a very few prime openings on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons.

IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO BEGIN LESSONS... Don't wait for us to post more openings to this space! The best way to find out about openings is to just get in touch, now! Regardless of what today's openings are...we always want to hear from interested students/parents in the community. Sometimes, we have flexibility which goes beyond what we can post here. Contact us! We'd love to hear from you. 

REMOTE/IN-PERSON In nearly all cases, we are able to teach in-person in our beautiful studio. Some students may choose remote lessons; a few may choose a mix of remote and in-person instruction. 

AGES/LEVELS All our openings are available for all ages and levels.

Coronavirus Operating Status

IN-PERSON LESSONS While the Studio remains open by appointment only, we are now available to teach in-person lessons for all students. If you want to come in-person, yes you can! If you are currently attending remotely but prefer to come in-person, just ask your teacher. 48+ hours notice, please. If you are a new or prospective student, just contact us to make an appointment. We can meet you in-person at the Studio for your FREE interview and/or for your lessons. 

REMOTE LESSONS While the Studio is back open for in-person lessons and most students are choosing to attend in-person, we are able to switch your lesson to remote-status whenever it is necessary (48 hours notice, please). We also are continuing to teach remotely for those students who prefer or require that option.

MASKS We thank you for continuing to wear a mask while inside the Studio. 

GUESTS/WAITING ROOM We have a large and comfortable waiting room and practice nook and it's open and available for your comfort! You may also choose to bring a reasonable number of guests (i.e. a friend or your siblings) with you. Note that the waiting room is open for you only around your appointment time. 

WORKSHOP CLASSES In-person Workshop classes have resumed. We continue to offer a limited number of remote workshops as well. 

BRIGHT STARTS CLASSES We have resumed the Bright Starts group beginner program with one Level 1 class on Saturdays. We only programmed one class this year, both to limit capacity and because we were unsure of demand. This class is now full. We look forward to welcoming more new students into the program in September 2022!

2021 VMTA Fall Festival Honors

Congratulations to the following students who earned the top rating of Superior at 2021 Fall Festival, an event sponsored by Virginia Music Teachers Association. In this event, students prepared two pieces: one in contemporary style, and one in historic style. This year's event was held by video.

Winter Break 2021

Summer Recital 2021

Due to the coronavirus situation, we weren't comfortable hosting our usual Summer Recital indoors...but we also were tired of videos and Zoom! On Saturday, June 12, we held this annual event outdoors in the park behind the Studio building! Over the course of the day, we were joined by 86 student performers! Participating students represented all ages and levels, including adults. While we hope to go back to a traditional indoor recital someday, we were overflowing with joy to see so many students sharing their music live and in-person.

Student Honors: NVMTA Sonata Festival 2021

Congratulations to Aruni Veluri and James Yao for earning the designation of Honors at Sonata Festival. This annual semi-competitive event is sponsored by Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association. In 2021, students submitted video recordings of two contrasting sonata movements.

Student Honors: NVMTA Achievement Awards 2021

Each year in May, Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association sponsors a competition they call Achievement Awards. It's a chance for the region's most high-achieving and dedicated youth students to compete for prizes and to receive expert commentary. This year's event was held using pre-recorded videos due to the coronavirus situation. We were lucky to have several students interested to step up and prepare for this demanding event. Congratulations to Philip Wang, who was selected for Honorable Mention. His program: Prelude and Fugue in c minor, WTC 1 (J.S. Bach); Sonata in D Major Hob. 37 (F.J. Haydn); Jazz Prelude No. 4 (Nikolai Kapustin).
