SCHOOL-YEAR SCHEDULE We began our new School Year schedule on August 29 and registration for new students will remain open on a rolling basis throughout the school year, subject to availability. We do still have "prime time" slots available Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. As usual, we still have many many earlier lesson slots at/before 4:00 PM weekdays plus Friday mornings still available.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO BEGIN LESSONS For your convenience, we post a summary of current openings to this space. But the best way to find out about openings is to just get in touch! Regardless of what today's openings are...we always enjoy hearing from interested students/parents in the community. Sometimes, we have flexibility which goes beyond what we can post here. Contact us! We'd love to hear from you.
REMOTE/IN-PERSON We are now able to teach your individual lesson either remotely or in-person in our beautiful studio. Some students may also choose a mix of remote and in-person instruction.
AGES/LEVELS All our openings are available for all ages and levels.
REMOTE LESSONS The default location will be "remote" through at least December 31, 2020. For most students, remote lessons are going very well! Many students are able to receive a substantially equivalent service remotely and if this is the case for you, we encourage you to attend your lessons remotely.
IN-PERSON LESSONS We are now able to teach lessons in-person for anyone who requests this option. An additional waiver/policy document needs to be signed upon your first visit to the Studio. And of course we are following all "phase 3" guidelines from the Virginia Department of Health, including but not limited to the wearing of face masks, maintaining distance between teachers and students, and disinfecting shared equipment after each lesson. Our big studios (most with two pianos) let us spread out while still sharing the same room!
THE STUDIO IS OPEN BY APPOINTMENT ONLY If you are a current student and you want to attend your lesson in-person, just ask your teacher. Give at least 48++ hours notice. If you are a new or prospective student, we are happy to schedule a FREE interview/trial lesson by Zoom. Just contact us to make an appointment! Once you register for lessons, we will be able to meet you in-person at the Studio.
GUESTS/FAMILIES/WAITING ROOM We have a large and comfortable waiting room but unfortunately it must remain closed until further notice. Likewise with guests. In the past, we treasured welcoming guests into our Studio but for now, all appointments will be for a maximum of three people: parent, teacher, and student.
WORKSHOP CLASSES We will hold workshop classes (supplementary small-group classes) in a remote format through at least December 31, 2020.
BRIGHT STARTS CLASSES We've made the difficult decision to not offer any in-person Bright Starts (young beginner) classes during 2020-21. We continue to serve former Bright Starts students in individual lessons and we welcome those who might have consider a group class to instead consider individual lessons. We hope to resume in-person Bright Starts group beginner classes in September 2021.
We knew that Summer 2020 would be like none other so we set out to support our interested students with innovative group enrichment classes with ultra-low tuition. Our only goal was to have fun and stay engaged while learning something new! Students joined us for the following special programs:
♪ 1/2 Day Remote Piano Camp with Andrew Horowitz
♪ Remote Group Theory classes with Olga Robets
♪ Summer Performance Workshops with Aphrodite Mitsopoulou
♪ Digital Music Composition with our old friend Tyler St. Clare
We were not able to host our usual Summer Recital due to the coronavirus situation but we made alternate plans to celebrate and demonstrate the achievement of our students! Bright Starts (group beginners) participated in a live online recital using Zoom on June 6. We were joined by nearly 40 students and parents and families members from all over the world. Our individual-lesson students participated in a YouTube virtual recital and we received nearly 90 different video submissions from our students. We've prepared a YouTube playlist with a selection of 20 videos representing a variety of ages and levels as well as our teacher-introduction video. If you're interested in what we do, check it out!
What event has seven pounds of M&M's, 144 cupcakes, 300+ humans walking through our door...plus 93 students performing 120+ pieces from memory in nine different short-short performance groups? Our 2019 Open House and Winter Mini-Recital, of course! Held in our little Studio home in Falls Church on December 8, 2019.
We treasure the opportunity to see so many people and hear so many performances, all in one day. Thank you to those who who performed and those who joined us and especially to our wonderful teachers for their support in preparing all our students for the event. If you weren't able to join us this year, mark your calendar for December 13, 2020! All are welcome.
You are invited! On Sunday, December 8, we will host our annual Open House and Mini-Recital at the Studio in Falls Church. While primarily an event for our current community of students, we warmly welcome guests and community of all ages. We enjoy short-short performance groups throughout the day as well as lots of cupcakes and general merriment. Doors open at 12:45 and close when the last group begins at 7:30.
We celebrated the end of our School Year with five recitals on June 8 & 9 at The Falls Church Episcopal. Our youngest performer was five years old and our oldest was eighteen. 122 students presented 169 different pieces. And no recital lasted more than 70 minutes! How gratifying it is for us to see our youngest beginners presenting themselves with confidence and our most advanced teens presenting a program full of demanding masterworks…all in the same weekend! To all our students and parents: we are grateful for your participation but also…for your support to us and to music. We thank you for making music—and our little studio—a part of your journey! To anyone else who might be reading this: you should join us next year! Our recitals are free and open to the public with no fees and no ticketing for students or guests.
